The Words & Pictures Dictionary

We have compiled this dictionary to provide student teachers, teachers and teacher educators with some of the specific terms related to picturebooks and English language teaching in order to establish a common understanding and so they can discuss these confidently and knowledgeably with colleagues and learners.

Our aim is for student teachers, teachers and teacher educators to appreciate the picturebook as an art form, an aesthetic object and a multimodal text and to recognise its potential for English language teaching and learning so they can instil a love of picturebooks and meaning-making from both words and pictures in their learners.
